Community Gardens & The School Yard
South West Education Foundation is here to educate the needy families.
Education which eradicates hunger and crime in the underprivileged neighborhoods
-- and locations of opportunity: Improving the quality of life here. The land keeps
us connected to nutrition, activity, local use of water, the seasons, and diversity of
local crops. Our garden is preserving character. We are already making a mark as
a valuable component of our community's character: helping maintain the safety of
the neighborhood, promoting our agricultural heritage, preservation the land use
with diversity, and moderating development. We have crop diversity and quality.
We using organic growing practices. We are growing a variety of crops instead of
just one; beats, beans, brussel sprouts, mustard, carrots, 2 types of lettuce, and
spinach. Local Means Green. As we enable our capacity to produce, we are
tapping into the local farmers markets. Minimizing handling and transportation costs
gives us maximum return on our investment in people and the land. The money
spent on our production stays in the community, "greening up" the local economy.
The green methods for constructing the new building surrounding this garden also
exemplify our commitment.
By improving the quality of the environment which surrounds and holds our
community, and utilizing ORGANIC PARTNERSHIPS we will actively improve
the quality of life for its members and the natural systems upon which we all rely.
LEARNING FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES
Some theories of education classify students as passive receivers of information.
Experiential education theory takes a different approach. Involving families as active
learners is the basic underlying philosophy of The Edible Schoolyard Programming
adapted from University of California's Berkley Schoolyard.
Experiential Learning is composed of three components:
Knowledge – Concepts, facts, information, and prior experience
Activity – Knowledge applied to current, ongoing tasks
Reflection – Thoughtful analysis and assessment of one's own activity and its
contribution to personal growth and impact on the environment. The South West
Educational Foundation, Inc is looking to bring the Best of Florida with the Best of
Farming to our Families.
