Mango Community Garden:  Work Experience Training
A quarter acre of land
east of I41 and North of
17th Street brings us
our opportunity to
partnership for a better
food resource for
Sarasota. Harvest
Tabernacle
Church/Harvest House
has the land, The South
West Educational
Foundation has the
man power and tools,
The Sarasota County
Extension Agency has
the starting force to
launch this project.
Why?  Workforce
Summer Training  is not
just a future concept.
It's here now.  We need
this approach.  And
we're just the team to
implement it.

Our youth  are learning
the commercial
production of
vegetables, fruits,
flowers, and other
plants, on a scale larger
than a home garden,
yet small enough that
many of the principles
of gardening can be
applied, and is often
oriented toward local
markets, such as
farmers markets.  Our
learning will not only
exemplify this approach
-- we look to mentor all
aspects of the scope,
startup and operation
of a market garden
business for all
"Harvesting Hands"
looking to learn.
Market gardening is the
commercial production of
vegetables, fruits, flowers,
and other plants, on a scale
larger than a home garden,
yet small enough that many
of the principles of gardening
can be applied, and is often
oriented toward local
markets, such as farmers
markets.  This series of 8
classes will cover different
aspects of the scope, startup
and operation of a market
garden business

June and July is the time to
start planning your Florida
Summer vegetable  and
melon harvest garden. Many
of our youth will become
skilled with weeding,
planting, cultivating, and
harvesting peppers, melons,
tomatoes, squash...all
organic and heirloom!  Where
do you go and how do you
find rare, delicious vegetable
seeds that produce
handsomely?
SeedSavers.org!!
Since 1975, Seed Savers
Exchange members have
passed on approximately one
million samples of rare garden
seeds to other gardeners. We
are a non-profit organization
of gardeners dedicated to
saving and sharing heirloom
seeds.

Do you actually like to eat
vegetables?
If not, focus on fruits and
herbs, edible and ornamental
flowers, and a favorite veggie
or two. A well-tended garden
will produce a lot of
vegetables. If you are
lukewarm about zucchini then
pass up that beautiful
seedling. (Or go introduce
yourself to your five nearest
neighbors so that you can
share come July).

What is your gardening space
like?
This is probably the most
important question for the
novice gardener. If you are
starting from bare dirt or,
more likely, a patch of lawn,
you have some work to do.
The plot needs to be
evaluated for sun and wind
exposure, moisture/drainage,
soil pH and elemental content,
pests, and other factors.
Opportunity Partnership with Suncoast Workforce Summer Youth
Program & Florida State University Extension Service
Robert Kluson of the Sarasota Extension Service pays a special visit to help our students
develop an understanding of our Garden Science Program.  Here, rows of Brussel Sprouts
are growing tall and healthy well into the summer.  The plants are now yielding sizable
greens for eating.  And the stalks are yielding special leaves for delicate salads.  Each stalk
is being observed for rain, and sun strength.  Bug resistance.  Taste.  Color and shape.
These Brussesel Sprouts are going to be yielding special seeds next year which will cultivate
a variety that is special for Sarasota.
